The Future-Ready Student: Graduate With Leverage, Not Just a Certificate
The university or any tertiary institution can either be a waiting room or a training ground. The difference is your intention and what you’re willing to get out of it. A future-ready student understands that graduation is not the starting line of adulthood, it is the checkpoint. The real work begins long before final year. You don’t start preparing for a marathon, on the morning of the marathon rather, you should have taken months exercising, running mini races, eating specific meals that contribute to your strength and weight, selected the appropriate running shoes and gears, etc.
Think of your university or polytechnic experience as a strategy game. You’re building three power levels at the same time:
Level 1: Academic Strength (Your Base Stats)
- Master core courses. Don’t cram definition, theories and concepts, understand them and how they work in real life.
- Attend at least one consultation hour per semester. A lot of you don’t utilize your alumni associations, lecturers, counsellors and mentors. Find someone within your area of study and sit with them to get their insights on a semester course or area of difficulty.
- Build relationships with two lecturers before final year. This allows you humanize the lecturers and build social relationships that contribute to your overall success within the school and when you leave.
- Aim for consistent performance, not last-minute miracles. Remember, the life you want is built by the habits and little things you do every day. An outstanding CPGA starts from 100L not second semester of 300L.
Level 2: Practical Skills (Your Skill Tree)
Choose one high-income or high-demand skill and commit to it:
- Excel or data tools
- Graphic design
- AI prompting
- Writing or communication
- Coding or web design
- Public speaking
Rule: Make sure you block out 5 hours weekly (minimum) to read, practice and gain additional knowledge in this skill. No excuses.
Level 3: Market Awareness (Your Map Visibility)
- Follow 5 professionals in your field on LinkedIn. Don’t just start and end your day on Instagram, TikTok or Twitch. Build a LinkedIn profile that can follow professionals and colleagues you admire, and also make them accept your request.
- Read industry-related news once a week. Endeavour to know one new thing about your area of study or interest once a week. By the end of semester, you’d have known at least fifteen to seventeen things, subjects, concepts, case studies, etc.
- Join one professional or student association. There are a lot of good ones in every campus like JCI, Rotaract Club, AIESEC, Campus fellowships, Student chapters for ICAN, National Association of Nigerian Students, etc.
Degrees get you shortlisted. Skills get you hired. Character gets you recommended. Future-ready students don’t wait for opportunity. They quietly build until opportunity recognizes them.
